Joel’s summary for management

Friday, August 11th, 2006

The famous writer, Joel Spolsky, recently posted three articles about methodologies of managing a software company on his blog. They are Command and Control, Econ 101, and Identity. The first two are quite interesting, while the last one was disappointing. Apparently Joel was managed by the first two methods in his career before, and he [...]

User Interface

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

According to MacWorld, Sony’s new big boss told its shareholders that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has trouble using Sony products because the user interface is way too complicated. Her Majesty is a happy iPod user and enjoying the idiot-proof Apple interface.
That reminds me my little iRiver player. It’s just way too complicated. I learned [...]

Bigger company got better edge

Wednesday, May 11th, 2005

Software industry in the US has several big acquisitions recently. Oracle buys Peoplesoft (merged cap 60B). Symantec (Cap 13B) buys Veritas (Cap 8.6B). Adobe (Cap 14.1B) buys Macromedia (Cap 2.8B). Suppose the merged cap doesn’t shrink after acquisition (though not likely), the new top software companies will be
Microsoft (269.1B)
Oracle (60B)
SAP (50.3B)
Symantec (21B)
Adobe (17B) / Infosys [...]

Recently I’ve got the Feb CTP version of VS 2005, which called itself a “Beta 2″. The Feb CTP version does not support my favorite PREfast, so I didn’t play with its C++ very much. Let’s talk about the Windows Form in C#.
The weakest link for .Net 1.x is its UI support, no kidding. Microsoft [...]

VisualStudio 2005 Try-Out (1)

Friday, March 4th, 2005

Recently I started playing with VS 2005 Beta 1, it’s not the newest toy but it’s pretty reliable compared to the good old days when I played with VS 2002 PDC preview.
VS 2005 contains a big bunch of new features. So far I’ve seen huge changes in .Net 2.0, generics in C# (finally, I believed [...]

An analogy of approaching your customer

Tuesday, January 11th, 2005

Recently I got bugged by our biz people. They got very excited because there are “big fishes” in front of them as they always do. Well, I’m the bad guy who tells people to calm down. Here’s my analogy.
Approaching your customer is like approaching a girl in a dancing party. The first meeting with your [...]
