Agressive and Passive

September 29th, 2004

I am a subscriber of PC Magazine and Dr. Dobb’s Journal. Recently my DDJ is expired but I have no idea about that. They should put something special on the cover of the last issue so that the customer will know. That’s passive.

My PC Magazine subscription is going to expire this November. Ironically, they sent me a postcard said that if I didn’t renew, they will charge my credit card automatically so that I won’t miss any issue. Sweet huh? That’s aggressive, but we are not through yet. They charge me $34.97 for one year (that’s 24 issues I believe). On their web site, anyone can have the deal of $25 for 25 issues. Why did they treat their existing subscribers like morons?

Actually I didn’t read the postcard, I found they charge my Wells Fargo card when I was using Money 2004 to manage my bills. Well, the first thing I do is to call Wells Fargo that the transaction is not authorized by me and you guys should take care of possible fraud. Then I have to call PC Magazine guys. Guess what? Nobody home. I had to write an e-mail to complain about that, and then they told me I have to cancel the automatic transaction myself via their convenient web service, and they’ve already told me this on the little 8-pt-fonted postcard. Sorry Mr. Dvorak, I can’t help to use your style criticizing the stupidity of PC Magazine. The greatest thing is that both Wells Fargo and PC Magazine refunded me. That’s sweet 🙂

Sep. 30: Oops, finally PC Mag wakes up and corrects the wrong refund ;p
